Live It Out
For a pessimist, I'm pretty optimistic.

Home. Not exactly for the best reasons in the world, but still, I’m home so it makes everything a little easier. My ridiculous back pain that’s been killing me on and off for a month or so, finally won this morning when I woke up crying and in so much pain that I couldn’t get out of bed for hours. After begging/crying/pleading with medical staff, I was able to be seen by an orthopedic doctor in new brunswick. I promise you that two hours or less that it took me to get one was the most painful drive of my life.

After looking at me for less than 2 minutes, he seemed to know exactly what was wrong. (I’ve been thinking everything from infection to pinched nerve to kidney stones to pulled muscle, so I had no idea what to expect) He’s pretty sure I have a herniated disc in my lower right back. I waited around for 4 hours to get a MRI and once he looks at the results, I’ll know for sure.

If that’s the case, I have three options:

1. Surgery: apparently it’s an outpatient thing, fairly simple and nothing too crazy. He claims I’d be back to work/school in a week or less.

2. Epidural injections: I can wait it out and see if it heals on it’s own, but if the pain is too intense I can get injections to ease the process. If it doesn’t get better in a few weeks or show improvement, I can get surgery.

3. Suck it up: He said my best bet is to get painkillers and rough it through these last 5 weeks of school and hope it heals on it’s own. If summer rolls around and I’m not doing any better, surgery is back on the table.

So, being the stubborn, insane girl that I am, I chose option number….

4. Really suck it up: I hate pain killers, drugs of any sort honestly, especially prescriptions and I’m well aware I can’t function on them. So I’ve chosen to have nothing but the “magical” combo of advil and extra strength tylenol.

Has anyone ever been through something like this before? and if so, suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated! I’m kind of a mess, I hate being helpless. Not to mention I’m super worried about this affecting my ability to concentrate and kick this semester’s ass like I’ve been up until this point.
